If you've shopped for banana ball pythons, you've probably seen both "banana" and "super banana" listed — and the price difference between the two often raises questions. Here's exactly what separates them.
The Genetic Difference
Banana is a co-dominant (incomplete dominant) morph. A ball python with a single copy of the banana gene shows the classic banana look: warm yellow replacing the normal brown and black pattern, with soft lavender to gray blotches. A super banana carries two copies of the same gene — one from each parent — and the extra dose changes the appearance further.
How They Look Different
Super bananas tend to run even brighter and more intensely yellow than a standard banana, with pale, almost creamish areas where the darker pattern would normally sit. The two are visually distinguishable side by side once you know what to look for, though the exact intensity varies some from line to line.
How Super Bananas Are Produced
You can't produce a super banana by pairing a banana with a normal ball python — that pairing only yields single-gene bananas and normals. A super banana only results when both parents carry the banana gene. Breed banana to banana and, on average, the clutch works out to roughly 25% super banana, 50% banana, and 25% normal. Breed a super banana to a normal, and every offspring inherits one copy of the gene, so the whole clutch hatches out banana.
Does Genetics Affect Price?
Super bananas are less common than single-gene bananas simply because producing one requires two banana parents in the same pairing, and the odds within any given clutch are lower. That relative scarcity, combined with the more striking coloration, generally puts super bananas at a premium over a standard banana with a comparable combo.
