Can a Ball Python Be an Emotional Support Animal?

A Different Kind of Emotional Support.

Not all companions have fur. Some have scales, beautiful patterns, and a special way of becoming part of your everyday life.

Companionship comes in all shapes and sizes. For some people, it's a playful puppy or a cuddly cat. For others, it's the quiet presence of a beautiful ball python.

Learn how a ball python can be an emotional support animal, explore the ESA process, and find your new companion at Ghost Constrictors.

Can a Ball Python Be an Emotional Support Animal?

Yes! A ball python may qualify as an emotional support animal (ESA).
An emotional support animal provides companionship or support that helps alleviate one or more effects of a person's disability.

Although dogs and cats are the most familiar emotional support animals, other species, including reptiles may be considered.

However, snakes are treated differently from more commonly recognized household animals under federal housing guidance. A person requesting a housing accommodation for a snake may need additional documentation explaining the disability-related need for that specific type of animal.

ESA eligibility is based on an individual's circumstances, not on the animal's breed, appearance.

Why Choose a Ball Python as a Companion?

There's something special about sharing your home with a ball python. They offer a unique kind of companionship that many reptile enthusiasts find rewarding.

Quiet Companionship

No barking or constant demands for attention. Ball pythons are naturally quiet animals that can be a wonderful fit for people who enjoy a peaceful home.

A Unique Connection

Over time, owners can become familiar with their snake's individual behaviors and preferences. Many people enjoy watching their ball python explore or allowing it to move calmly through their hands during appropriate handling sessions.

A Meaningful Daily Routine

From checking temperatures and humidity to preparing meals and maintaining their habitat, caring for a ball python provides opportunities to build a consistent and rewarding routine.

A Pet Without Fur

Love animals but prefer a pet without fur? Ball pythons offer a different pet-owning experience.

Fantastic Breeder & Beautiful, Healthy Python

This was hands-down the best experience I’ve ever had searching for, purchasing, and bringing home a new pet! The website was clear, current, and easy to navigate, with some of the fairest prices we found for hand-raised pythons. The owners were incredibly responsive, knowledgeable, and helpful in answering all of our questions throughout the process.

Our new little guy, “Neil DeGrasse Python” (aka Neil), arrived safe and sound and in excellent health. He has blended seamlessly into our family, and our 8-year-old daughter has been able to actively participate in caring for him, which has made the experience even more special.

We couldn’t be happier with Neil or with our experience and would highly recommend Ghost Constrictors to anyone looking to add a python to their family!

I honestly can’t say enough great things about

I honestly can’t say enough great things about our experience with Ghost Constrictors. This has been the most exciting, positive, and rewarding experience I have been a part of. From the first email interaction, answering endless questions from me, educating, to continued check ins about our progress, and everything in between has been so amazing. They care! They truly care about their animals and guiding and supporting new keepers, such as myself. We are absolutely in love with our girl, Lyra! You can tell she’s been well socialized with kids and she has shown ZERO signs of distress during handling sessions with my children ( ages 10 and 15). She has been acclimating so well, eats like a champ, had her first shed with us and has been the most amazing addition to our home! I appreciate you guys so much! Thank you for such a positive and rewarding experience!

Total Game Changer!

I have a few snake racks, both ARS & FB and always hated how I'd need to get a chair to see what my thermostats said. Now with these nifty holders I can easily view them from the ground and they keep things nicely organized. Plus assembly was super easy! Highly recommend these!

Frequently Asked Questions About Emotional Support Snakes
Can a snake be an emotional support animal?

Yes, a snake may qualify as an emotional support animal in certain circumstances. The individual must have a disability-related need, and a housing accommodation involving a reptile may require additional supporting documentation.
Do ball pythons need special ESA training?

No. Emotional support animals do not require specialized task training. They are different from service animals.
Do I need to register my snake as an ESA?

No. There is no official federal ESA registry or certification requirement. Appropriate documentation from a qualified healthcare professional may be necessary for a housing accommodation request.
Can I have an emotional support snake in a no-pets apartment?

You may request a reasonable accommodation if you qualify under applicable housing laws. However, reptiles other than turtles are treated as less common animals under HUD guidance, and approval is not automatic.
Does an ESA letter mean I can take my snake everywhere?

No. Emotional support animals do not have the same public-access rights as service dogs under the ADA. Airlines, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses may restrict snakes.
Does Ghost Constrictors provide ESA letters?

No. Ghost Constrictors raises and sells captive-bred ball pythons. Our partner Pettable offers access to independent professional ESA evaluations.
Can I choose any Ghost ball python as my emotional support animal?

You can choose any available Ghost ball python as a pet or ESA, but purchasing one does not establish ESA eligibility. A licensed professional must evaluate the individual's needs, and any requested housing accommodation is assessed separately.
Are ball pythons good pets for beginners?

Ball pythons can be excellent pets for prepared first-time snake owners. They require appropriate heating, humidity, enclosure space, feeding, and long-term care.
